Research Work

The Department of Neonatology actively participates in the development of research activities at the School of Pediatrics. The Head of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences N.S. Bozhbanbayeva, is a member of the Scientific Committee of the School of Pediatrics.

The department trains 2 PhD candidates in the specialty “Medicine”:

  1. M. Adilbekova, 3rd-year PhD student. Dissertation topic: “Prognostic Significance of Complex Biomarkers in Intraventricular Hemorrhages in Preterm Newborns.”
  2. R. Alimuhamedov, 2nd-year PhD student. Dissertation topic: “Assessment of the Effectiveness of a Complex of Minimally Invasive Technologies in Stabilizing the Respiratory Status of Preterm Infants.”

The scientific consultant for both PhD candidates is the Head of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences N.S. Bozhbanbayeva.The Department of Neonatology is also an executor of a Scientific and Technical Project under the Program-Targeted Financing of Scientific and Technical Programs of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan for 2024–2026. The project topic is: “Development of a Scientifically-Based Program to Improve Perinatal Outcomes in Preterm Births”, with the neonatal block supervised by the Head of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences N.S. Bozhbanbayeva.

Under the guidance of the Head of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences N.S. Bozhbanbayeva, an application has been submitted to participate in a Scientific and Technical Project for 2026–2028 of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the topic: “Development and Implementation of a Scientifically-Based Translational Strategy for the Management of Neonatal CMV Infection.”

During the department’s operation, several copyrights have been obtained for research activities, educational programs, and educational-methodical literature.

In 2024, the Head of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences N.S. Bozhbanbayeva, published a monograph on one of the pressing topics of modern neonatology: “Congenital and Perinatal Viral Infections.” The department’s academic staff also actively engage in publishing, as reflected in articles published in international databases such as Scopus and in journals of the Committee for Control of Education and Science of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan (KKSON MES RK), including publications with students.

The department’s academic staff actively participate in domestic and international conferences on neonatology and pediatrics. In 2025, PhD, Associate Professor Sairankyzy S. successfully completed a scientific internship under the “500 Scientists Bolashak” program at one of the world’s top universities, King’s College London (London, UK).

Furthermore, the department conducts active research work with students. First- and second-year residents in Neonatology actively present at the Online Journal Club under the guidance of the department’s academic staff. At the III International Scientific and Practical Conference “Healthy Generation – the Future of Kazakhstan”, in the Young Scientists section – poster presentations, the department’s students won prize places:

  • PhD candidates I.M. Adilbekova and U.R. Alimuhamedov – 1st place (supervisor: Head of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences N.S. Bozhbanbayeva);
  • 4th-year Pediatrics student Aydana Zharlykasynova and 5th-year International Faculty students D. Amangeldi, I. Kinayatova, A. Zhumatova – 2nd place (supervisor: PhD, Associate Professor Sairankyzy S.);
  • Department residents A.A. Aidarova, M. Nurmakhambet, G. Duisebay, U. Orazali – 3rd place (supervisor: Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor I.E. Suleimenova).

At the international forum “AsfenForum”, organized by KazNMU named after S.D. Asfendiyarov, PhD candidate U.R. Alimuhamedov, a second-year student, under the guidance of the Head of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences N.S. Bozhbanbayeva, won 1st place with a presentation on a modern problem in neonatology using the Lisa method.
