The Department of Paediatric Surgery of the Almaty State Medical Institute was established in 1957 on the basis of the paediatric surgery clinic of the city hospital.
The first head of the Department was associate professor Cherkasova E.D. from 1968 to 2011.
Then head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery of KazNMU was academician of NAS of RK, Honoree of the State Prize RK, Honored Scientist of RK Ormantaev K.S.
Professor Ormantaev Almas Kamalovich from 2014 to 2020.
The Department has 3 clinical bases (CECMC, CP and PS, «Aksai» University Clinic of KazNMU S.D. Asfendiyarov).Professor Tursunov K.T. is the head of the department from 2010 to 2014.

Currently, the head of the Department is Chief Doctor of the Centre of Emergency Children’s Medical Care, Candidate of Medical Sciences Kusainov Abai Zkryevich.
In honor of the Honorary Head of the Department 18.11.2021 the Department of Pediatric Surgery has been renamed as the Department of Pediatric Surgery Academician Ormantaev K.S

The staff of the Department published more than 1000 scientific works, including 9 chapters in the Union manuals on paediatric surgery, 13 monographs, 20 methodological recommendations on the most topical issues of diagnosis and treatment of surgical diseases in children. Every year the Department’s students take part in All-Union and All-Russian scientific and student conferences, where students occupy prize places. Under the leadership of Ormantaev K.S. for many years there has been a Society of Children’s Surgeons, which periodically organizes republican scientific-practical conferences, «master – classes» on children’s surgery. The Department maintains relations and participates in international scientific forums on paediatric surgery and paediatrics in Europe, America, Central and South-East Asia.
